Disney buys rights to stream new Studio Ghibli movie Chikan Fauka for $500 Million
Hayao Miyazaki has signed a new deal with Disney that will pay him more than $500 million for the rights to his new animated film Chikan Fauka. The Studio Ghibli project is slated to release on Disney+ sometime in 2022.
According to The BloJo Movie Network, Chikan Fauka is a coming-of-age and anti-war story about a magical chicken named Chikushou who lives in an abandoned amusement park in a futuristic Japan. Chikushou shares adventures with his best friend Baka, a hairy pig who dreams of becoming an airplane pilot. Chikushou and Baka embark on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual connection. On their journey, they will encounter gods, witches, spirits, strange creatures, and an evil American named General Bossy who lives in a flying castle and controls the world’s largest army.
According to Miyazaki, his animation style is extremely time-consuming and can take months to finish one minute of animation. However, with Chikan Fauka being his last movie, he didn’t care as much. It only took him 12 days to complete the entire movie. He also told BloJo that Chikan Fauka will be his final movie.
“It’s time for this old dog to retire,” said Miyazaki, “I know, I’ve said that before, but I really mean it this time. I now have what Americans call ‘fuck you’ money, so I think I’m going to buy a sushi burrito franchise, get drunk on sake, and roll around naked in my money. I already slapped together a quick treatment for a Chikan Fauka trilogy, so maybe if the first one is successful, Disney will be interested in making all three movies. Honestly, the story doesn’t make sense, but I don’t think Disney cares much. And yes, I know that I’ve already made a movie about a pig who is an actual airplane pilot, but who cares? I suppose you could say I have ‘fuck it’ money, too. Ha-ha. Oh and one more thing, I also cut a deal with Taco Bell and they will be selling Chikan Fauka wraps when the movie releases next year. The money keeps rolling in”
