A.V. Pull List: DC’s Absolute Universe will be a fresh starting point for readers.

DC Comics is shaking things up with a brand-new universe, aptly named "The Absolute Universe." Created by the energy of Darkseid, this alternate reality promises to be a fresh and gritty starting point. Whether you’re a seasoned reader or a curious newcomer, The Absolute Universe is your ticket to a darker, tougher, and more badass version of the DC heroes you know and love.

Starting this October, DC will launch a trio of new comics featuring this universe's versions of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. The twist? These iconic heroes are now underdogs, struggling with far fewer resources than their main universe counterparts. Imagine a world where Batman has no wealth, Wonder Woman lacks her Amazonian sisterhood, and Superman is stripped of his Kryptonian heritage. This is the harsh new reality of The Absolute Universe, where our heroes must be more resourceful, tougher, and—above all—more human.

Absolute Batman #1 will be hitting shelves on October 9th as the first of these new titles. Written by the legendary Scott Snyder and illustrated by Nick Dragotta, this comic introduces a version of Bruce Wayne who’s lost it all—no wealth, no Alfred, and no Wayne Manor. This version of the Dark Knight is grittier, more desperate, and ready to fight tooth and nail to reclaim his city.

Next up is Absolute Wonder Woman #1 from Kelly Thompson and artist Hayden Sherman. This reinvention of Diana Prince takes away her island paradise, her Amazonian sisterhood, and her mission of peace. Stripped of her comforts and left to fend for herself, this Wonder Woman is poised to redefine what it means to be a warrior in a world that has turned its back on her.

Finally, Absolute Superman #1, written by Jason Aaron with art by Rafa Sandoval, brings us a Kal-El who has lost everything—his home, his family, and even his Fortress of Solitude. In this new world, Superman must discover what makes him a hero when all the trappings of his former life have been taken away.

It’s important to note that The Absolute Universe isn’t a total brand reboot like the New 52 was back in the day. DC isn’t erasing what came before. Instead, this is a celebration and expansion—a new sandbox to explore while the main universe continues to thrive. As a long-time fan, I'm excited for this new universe of characters, even if they're grittier takes on the ones we already know and love. It can be intimidating to dive into comics, especially when ongoing runs feel overwhelming, but this fresh starting point is exactly what some of us need. I’ll be honest—I’ve checked out of some DC titles because I’ve gotten lost in the stacks. But this new launch is the perfect way for me to jump back on board, even though my wallet already hates me. I can’t wait to check out this new universe of comics.
