Cynthia Erivo and Rachel Ziegler will lead the charge in Starship Troopers remake
In unexpected news that has fans clutching their original Starship Troopers DVDs, director Neil Blomkamp just been announced to helm a Starship Troopers remake. Blomkamp is on a mission to update Paul Verhoeven’s beloved satirical classic for the “woke” generation, which, of course, means fewer bugs and more social commentary about privilege.
Supposedly, the leads will be played by The Wicked actress Cynthia Erivo and the fresh face from West Side Story and Snow White, Rachel Ziegler. These up-and-coming actresses will reportedly battle alien bugs, but not before confronting diversity, representation, and the pressing issue of, um, whatever is woke at the time.
The new Starship Troopers will still have all the themes of the original but will be wrapped in a light, digestible, and social-media-friendly package. When asked about the changes, Blomkamp said, “I wanted to make a modern Starship Troopers that reflects the current social climate while also being action-packed.”
In an extended interview at BlowJo.com, Blomkamp promised to add a timely layer of humor, too. Instead of the iconic “Would you like to know more?” recruitment ads, we’ll have, “Would you like to understand your privilege?” and “Does your enemy have a voice too?” Also, Blomkamp added that the brain bug will still be around, but now it’s advocating for gender inclusivity and talking about toxic masculinity in the military. It will be one of the most provocative characters in sci-fi history.
Blomkamp also stated that he’s doing this all for the future of cinema. He wants his Starship Troopers to be a “conversation starter. We can’t wait to see what Blomkamp has in store, and we also can’t wait to see the shower scene. Let’s hope Blomkamp delivers a classic for the modern era.
